In recent years, microgrids, as small scale power systems that include renewable energy sources, have attracted much attention for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving reliability. One of the most important features of a microgrid is the ability to be off the grid or work islanded. The ability to islanding the system improves its reliability.
Despite these benefits, the microgrids function in the island state is due to high production uncertainties, high load variations, reliance on own resources and a lack of inertia causing high frequency variations. Also, low inertia reduces the absorption of renewable units. So one of the main challenges of microgrids in the island state is to set the frequency within its permissible range.
Based on many studies in the field of frequency control of islanded microgrids, this thesis presents a voltage control based method for frequency control. In this method, an appropriate reference model based on the model of a machine connected to non infinite bus is presented . The reference model is the same model of a machine with an non-infinite bus with sufficient inertia. Then a controller is designed so that the transmission function of the studied machine is coupled with a controller equal to the reference model transfer function. The main idea is to create a virtual inertia by the controller. The proposed controller applies to a microgrid.
The test system is base on CIGRE BENCHMARK network, which includes diesel generators and renewable resources and operates in island mode. The performance of the proposed controller during load changes is analyzed and compared with the performance of the PID controller. Simulations were performed by PSCAD / EMTDC and MATLAB SIMULINK software.
