Nowadays, the production of solid municipal waste and especially food waste, is increasing due to population growth. finding proper solutions seems necessary to manage these wastes because to the lack of space for burying them or environmental hazards caused by burning them. Using food waste in the anaerobic digestion could be an appropriate method in order to manage and extract energy. Many solutions have been used to improve this process, one of which is the addition of trace elements to digestion. Nanoparticles have more efficient activity and penetration in biological cells compared to the micro-sized particles due to their larger dispersion and contact surface. Therefore, selenium and molybdenum nanoparticles were assigned and employed on the production of biogas and biomethane from anaerobic digestion of food waste process in this study. At the beginning, aforementioned nanoparticles were produced using biosynthesis method by banana peel extract (BPE) as a reducing factor for selenium and molybdenum salts. Their accuracy and size were checked using relevant analyzes. Accordingly, it was observed that Se and Mo NPs are spherical in shape and have an average diameter of 130 and 100 nm, respectively. At the second stage, the anaerobic digestion of food waste process was performed employing trace elements in two separate Micro and Nano scale in digesters, with 30 days retention time and mesophilic temperature condition. First, Se and Mo salts as the micro scale study, were separately added to the anaerobic digester with four concentrations of 2, 6, 12 and 18 mg.kg-1 TS and their results compared with the control. Base on the best results from above process, the concentrations of 3, 6, 12 and 18 mg.kg-1 TS were determined for Se and Mo NPs, and were then separately added to the digesters in order to Nano scale study. The results represented that employing Se NPs at optimal concentration of 6 mg.kg-1 TS which was lead to the production of 595 ml.g-1 VS methane, shows an increase of 50% and 19% in methane production compared with the control and optimum treatment of selenium salt, respectively. Besides that, the addition of Mo NPs at optimal concentration of 6 mg.kg-1 TS with the 580 ml.g-1 VS of produced methane, was lead to the increase of 49% and 16%, in methane production compared with the control and optimum treatment of molybdenum salt, respectively.
