In last decade financial electricity markets have developed beside physical electricity markets. Power producers can hedge themselves against price uncertainties by attending in financial electricity markets. Financial markets use different financial contracts for hedging market participants. Option contracts are one of the most flexible types of financial instruments. Strategic behavior of a producer in financial/physical market can affect its strategic behavior in physical/financial market and consequently energy price in the both markets. Market regulators should study the interaction between financial and physical markets in order to making right decisions regarding development of financial markets and their instruments. In this thesis, an equilibrium model is presented in order to study the interaction between put option and day-ahead electricity markets from the viewpoint of market regulator.
In chapter three, first a comprehensive equilibrium model for a joint put option and day-ahead markets is presented. Interaction between put option and day-ahead markets, uncertainty in demand, and elasticity of consumers to strike price, premium price, and day-ahead price are taken into account in this model. Then, Premium price at equilibrium of the joint put option and day-ahead markets is used as a new method for put option pricing. A formula for computing strike prices at which producers and consumers are willing to trade put option is presented. Market regulator can use this formula to determine desired strike prices for financial markets. In premium price-strike price plane, the area at which producers and consumers are willing to trade put option is referred to as Option Contract Area (OCA). OCA is proposed as a range for option pricing. The impacts of transmission congestion on OCA and operation of the joint option and day-ahead markets are investigated.
In chapter four, equilibrium models for the joint option and day-ahead markets under uniform and pay-as-bid pricing in day-ahead market are developed. Then, impacts of uniform and pay-as-bid energy pricing in day-ahead electricity market on equilibrium of the joint option and day-ahead electricity markets and consequently on option pricing and on the operation of the joint markets are studied.
Option markets usually impose a daily premium price limit on each contract. In chapter five, the impacts of premium bounds of put option contracts on the operation of put option and day-ahead electricity markets are investigated.
Black-Scholes pricing is one of the most famous methods in option pricing. In chapter six, first Black-Scholes pricing method is generalized for put option pricing at the equilibrium of the joint put option and day-ahead electricity markets. Then, the efficiency of the presented option pricing method is compared with the efficiency of Black-Scholes method at the equilibrium of the joint option and day-ahead electricity markets.
In each chapter the proposed approach is applied to a 4-power producer power system that has a day-ahead and a put option electricity market. Simulation results are analyzed. Conclusions and suggestion for future researches in chapter seven close the thesis.
