Crystal engineering studies on new coordination compounds with carboxamide ligand containing tetrahydrofuran moiety: Design, synthesis and investigation
of weak interactions in the crystal structures
In this project, regarding the systematic investigation of elimination effect of furan aromaticity in the crystal packing structure, the new N-(tetrahydro-2-furanylmethyl)-2-pyrazinecarboxamide ligand (L1) in contrast with previously reported carboxamide ligand containing furan ring (L2) was designed, synthesized and characterized by IR, 13C NMR and 1H NMR spectroscopies. In the following, the new mercury (II) halide complexes [Hg2Cl4(L1)2OH2] (1(, [Hg2Br4(L1)2OH2] (2) And [HgI2(L1)2] (3) were synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography analysis. The results showed that the complexes 1 and 2 are isostructure in which carboxamide ligand L1 coordinated to the metal center at 1:1 ratio, has created a tetramer. The molecular structure of 3 was polymeric in which the mercury center has the six-coordination number with octahedral geometry. Regarding the presence of chiral carbon in the ligand structure and production of a racemic mixture for L1, all complexes were crystallized as the racemic solid solutions with enantiomeric disorder. Comparison of intermolecular interactions in the crystal structures of mercury complexes containing L2, and the corresponding compounds 1 and 2 in this project, indicate to the elimination effect of furan aromaticity on the change of π-based interactions of the furan ring to hydrogen bonding of THF moiety. The proportions of intermolecular interactions obtained from the Hirshfeld surface analysis showed that the proportions of H…H and O…H contacts in complexes 1 and 2 have increased to the complexes, including L2. It can be related to increasing in the number of hydrogen atoms on the THF ring and the presence of the water molecule in the crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2.
