The ability to apply demand response programs and demand side management is among the most important incentives and advantages of implementing smart grids, through which a variety of benefits such as optimized power consumption, cost savings, and increase in penetration of renewable energy resources- such as wind power- are achieved. A desirable framework for demand response problems should have two features: firstly, it should present an economically optimized planning for generation, buying, and selling of energy. Secondly, it should be robust as possible against system uncertainties especially against that are related to wind power generation. This dissertation has made steps toward these two goals. As first step, we had proposed a framework for demand response, in which a device known as 'Energy Consumption Scheduler' (ECS) is used. In the proposed framework, the consumers' ECSs, considering the amount of wind power generation for the next 24 hours, calculate the generation of the micro-gas turbine installed in the smart grid and the power needed to be bought from power market so that the total cost of the microgrid is minimized. In the proposed method, the privacy of consumers is not endangered since each consumer accomplished his consumption planning by using his private ECS and does not offer the data related to amount and time of his consumption to a central controller like in direct load control methods. The proposed method also models the interactions between consumers using game theories.
As the next step, we have extended the proposed demand response framework so that it could withstand against the uncertainties of planning variables especially wind power generation. Most of common demand response methods in power system use sort of deterministic planning approach, i.e. assume the uncertainty related to planning input parameters such as the amount of wind power generation during next 24 hours to be known. But forecasting such variables always include some errors. Generally, a suitable approach in order to withstand against the uncertainties of variables of an optimization problem is using stochastic planning method. Therefore in order to reduce the undesirable effects of the uncertainty related to wind power generation, the stochastic planning method is used for demand response planning in this dissertation. In this method, planning is achieved by minimizing the microgrid's expected cost considering every probable scenario. Thus, various scenarios for wind power generation during next 24 hours need to be created. For this means, we have used wind speed probabilistic forecasts to create scenarios. Also a sort of scenario reduction scheme should be used to reduce the created scenarios to a preferable number. We have simulated the proposed method for three different days, each having a different wind speed profile, and compared it with deterministic planning. Simulation results prove the excellence of the proposed stochastic planning approach over deterministic planning methods.
